Obverse description Central circular field bearing the Arabic honorific title 'Izz al-Din in two lines, enclosed within a plain inner circle. A marginal Arabic legend encircles the central motif, though it is largely fragmentary and illegible due to the crude hammered strike and surface wear. The overall design is characteristic of the informal, non-figural epigraphic style common to Saltukid copper coinage of the 12th century.

Additional information

The Saltukids were a Turkmen dynasty holding Erzurum and its surrounding plateau as vassals — nominally under the Seljuqs, though in practice largely autonomous. 'Izz al-Din Salduq b. 'Ali ruled during a period of sustained pressure from both the Seljuq sultanate to the east and the Georgian kingdom to the north, which was actively expanding under Queen Tamar's predecessors. Copper fals of this dynasty are poorly represented in major collections, partly because Erzurum sat on a frontier that changed hands repeatedly, limiting what survived in any single hoard context.
