Hulagu Khan's destruction of the Abbasid Caliphate in February 1258 — the sack of Baghdad and execution of Caliph al-Musta'sim — left a political vacuum across Mesopotamia and the Jazira that the Ilkhanate filled with extraordinary speed. The Lu'lu'id dynasty of Mosul, under Badr al-Din Lu'lu's son al-Malik al-Salih, made rapid submission to Mongol authority, and these copper vassal issues were among the first tangible expressions of that accommodation — local minting infrastructure turned toward legitimizing the new overlords within months of the conquest.
