Obverse description The obverse presents a multi-line Arabic epigraphic field arranged in six horizontal registers within a plain inner border. The legend opens with the name 'Lu'lu'' at the top, followed by the honorific titles of Badr al-Din Lu'lu', the vassal ruler of Mosul: 'al-Malik al-Rahim' (the Merciful King), 'Badr al-Din', 'Sultan al-Islam' (Sultan of Islam), and 'Abu al-Fada'il' (Father of Virtues). The lowest register carries the opening of the Shahada: 'La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammad rasul Allah, salla Allahu alayhi.' The coin exhibits the bold, angular Kufic-influenced naskh script typical of thirteenth-century Jaziran mint production, struck on an irregular flan with a rope or cable outer border.
