| Obverse description | Central field bears a stylized step-pyramid or mihrab-like device rendered in bold, somewhat crude hammered relief, typical of early Abbasid provincial coinage. The design is surrounded by a circular Arabic legend in Kufic script arranged around the inner field. The overall fabric is irregular and slightly off-round, consistent with hand-struck copper fulus of the eastern Abbasid provinces. The die work is characteristic of the Balkh mint's anonymous issues, with the central motif serving as a decorative space-filler rather than a figurative emblem. |
