Obverse description Crudely struck, irregularly shaped copper flan bearing a multi-line Kufic Arabic inscription arranged in four horizontal lines across the field. The legend reads the Shahada and mint formula, attesting to the profession of Islamic faith and identifying the mint of al-Ruha (Edessa). The script is characteristic of early Umayyad provincial coinage, with angular Kufic letterforms filling the central field. No figural imagery is present, consistent with the aniconic reform coinage introduced under the Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik. The coin surface shows natural patination and porosity typical of hammered copper issues of this period.
