The Tanukh were an Arab tribal confederation settled in the northern Syrian steppe and Jazira region, and their brief window of autonomous copper coinage falls precisely within the chaotic transitional decade when Umayyad monetary reform was still consolidating control over provincial minting. Anonymous copper fals of this type were not struck by a centralized authority in any meaningful administrative sense — local tribal leaders and regional strongmen filled the vacuum left by the collapse of Byzantine and Sasanian small-change networks.
