Al-Zahir Ghazi ruled Aleppo for over three decades as one of Saladin's sons, consolidating the city's autonomy within the fragmented Ayyubid inheritance while maintaining an unusually sophisticated urban administration. The ornamented square type fals belongs to a broader Ayyubid copper coinage revival that filled genuine small-denomination needs in Syrian markets — gold and silver alone could not service the grain sellers, bath-house keepers, and street vendors of a city Aleppo's size. The multiple Balog reference numbers reflect genuine die variation across the long reign rather than distinct emissions, suggesting continuous small-batch production rather than organized mint campaigns.
