Al-Zahir Ghazi, son of Saladin, ruled Aleppo for over three decades and proved a capable independent operator long after the Ayyubid confederation had begun fracturing among his brothers and cousins. His copper coinage is notably varied in type — the ornamented circle series alone encompasses multiple die groupings catalogued by Balog — reflecting sustained local mint activity rather than opportunistic or emergency production. The Aleppo mint under his authority was among the most prolific of the Syrian Ayyubid workshops.
