| Beschrijving keerzijde | Within an inner circle of pellets, the sultan's personal name Barquq appears accompanied by the epithet 'al-dunya wa al-din'. A surrounding marginal legend records the mint name Dimashq (Damascus) and the Hijri date written out in full words. The entire design is enclosed within a plain outer circle followed by a grenetis border. The layout follows the standard Mamluk fals format with central name and peripheral mint-and-date inscription. |

Al-Zahir Barquq was the first Circassian (Burji) sultan to rule the Mamluk Sultanate, seizing power in 1382 and breaking the century-long Bahri Turkic succession. His reign was interrupted — he was briefly deposed and imprisoned in Kerak in 1389, making copper issues from Damascus dated to the immediately preceding years among the last struck under his first reign. The Damascus mint remained active through these political upheavals, though output in base metal was erratic during periods of contested authority.
