Obverse description Within a beaded or linear circle bisected by a horizontal line, two lines of Arabic legend naming the sultan are distributed in the upper and lower registers of the divided field. A small gnat or fly device appears within the design, serving as a mint or workshop symbol characteristic of Mamluk copper coinage. The strike is typical of hammered Mamluk fals production, with the flan showing irregular edges and moderate die wear. The overall execution reflects the utilitarian character of late fourteenth-century Mamluk base-metal coinage.
Obverse script Arabic
Obverse lettering الملك الظاهر
(Translation: Al-malik Al-Zahir: `The ruler al-Zahir [Sayf al-Din Abu Sa`id Barquq].)
