Obverse description Within a beaded circle, a central field bearing the honorific title of the Zengid ruler Al-Malik Al-Salih Isma'il in Kufic Arabic script, embellished with a fleur-de-lys ornament. A circular marginal legend surrounds the beaded border, containing further titulature or dating formulae. The overall design is characteristic of the hammered copper coinage of 12th-century Syria, with somewhat irregular flan edges typical of the Halab mint output.
