Obverse description Central field occupied by multiple lines of Arabic Kufic-style inscription arranged horizontally within a rectangular frame or cartouche, the text reading titles and epithets of the ruler al-Salih Isma'il. The inscription is set in relief against a granular copper surface, with a dotted or beaded border encircling the outer periphery of the irregularly shaped flan. The lettering is bold and characteristic of Zengid hammered coinage of the late 12th century.
