Al-Nasir Yusuf II ruled Aleppo and Damascus through the final, desperate years of Ayyubid power in Syria — years defined entirely by the Mongol advance westward. This fals was struck just one year before Hülegü's forces sacked Aleppo in January 1260, massacring much of the population and effectively ending Ayyubid rule in the city. Al-Nasir Yusuf himself was captured by the Mongols later that year and executed, reportedly on Hülegü's orders, shortly after the Battle of Ain Jalut.
