Abu Sa'id Bahadur Khan consolidated Ilkhanid rule at a moment when the western provinces were perpetually contested, and Erzurum — sitting astride the Anatolian plateau trade routes toward Tabriz — required a functioning local copper supply to sustain everyday market transactions that silver dirhams couldn't serve. Fals coinage at this level was essentially municipal infrastructure. The Erzurum mint operated intermittently under both Ilkhanid governors and briefly competing Mongol claimants during the succession wars following Öljeitü's death in 1316.
Abu Sa'id's reign technically ended with his death in 1335, but effective central control over frontier mints like Erzurum had fragmented well before that.
