VE Day — 8 May 1945 — carried particular weight in the Netherlands, where German occupation had lasted five years and ended with the Hunger Winter of 1944–45 still fresh. An estimated 20,000 Dutch civilians died of starvation in those final months. The liberation came in stages, with the north and west not freed until the formal surrender itself.
This is a French mint issue for a Dutch commemoration — Monnaie de Paris has struck Dutch collector pieces under contract for years, a practical arrangement that has drawn little attention but shaped much of the modern Dutch commemorative catalog.
