Obverse description Bare-headed effigy of Napoleon IV (the Prince Imperial) facing left, rendered in high relief with finely detailed wavy hair. The legend NAPOLEON IV arcs along the left periphery and EMPEREUR along the right, both in raised Latin capitals. The word ESSAI appears in the lower field beneath the truncation, flanked by the engraver's signature C. DE F. The portrait displays the youthful features of the eighteen-year-old pretender, executed in a classicizing style consistent with Second Empire medallic tradition. A toothed border frames the entire obverse.
