Obverse description The obverse displays the Sultan's tughra (royal monogram) of Ahmed III rendered in elaborate calligraphic style occupying the central field, with foliate and floral ornamental devices surrounding it. A fine beaded border encircles the design. The tughra's characteristic upward sweeping strokes and looping lower elements are boldly struck in the high-relief hammered technique typical of early 18th-century Ottoman gold coinage.
