The 1771 sede vacante issue marks the interregnum following the death of Charles Nicolas d'Oultremont, who died in February of that year after a reign of less than four months. Chapter coinage struck during a vacancy of the see was a well-established prerogative of the Liège cathedral chapter, asserting its governance authority between episcopal appointments. The vacancy lasted until François-Charles de Velbrück was elected in June 1771.
