| Obverse description | Central field displays a crowned heraldic lion of Brabant set within an elaborate double-headed eagle displayed, the wings spread broadly to fill the field. A small shield bearing the arms of Brabant — the golden lion on sable — is superimposed at the center of the eagle's breast. The surrounding peripheral legend in Latin reads ALBERTVS ET ELISABET DEI GRATIA, identifying the joint sovereigns Archduke Albert and Archduchess Isabella as rulers by divine grace. The design is executed in the bold, slightly crude relief characteristic of early seventeenth-century hammered coinage of the Spanish Netherlands. |
