Reverse description A bold cross pattee divides the reverse field into four quarters, each containing alternating castles and lions passant, the traditional heraldic emblems of the united kingdoms of Castile and Leon. The castles are depicted as turreted Gothic fortifications, while the lions are shown rampant in the opposing quarters, all rendered in the robust, high-relief style typical of Castilian medieval gold coinage. The quarters are separated by small ornamental stops at the ends of the cross arms. A beaded inner border surrounds the quartered shield design, with the circular Latin legend running along the outer periphery.
