| Reverse description | A bold quartered cross divides the field into four quadrants, each alternately bearing the castles of Castile and the rampant lions of León, the heraldic emblems of the united kingdoms. The entire cross and quartered shield design is enclosed within a prominent octofoil (eight-lobed) inner border, a hallmark of Enriquean dobla coinage. A beaded outer border surrounds the composition, with the full royal titulary legend inscribed in Gothic Latin characters around the periphery. The overall die work is characteristic of the Seville mint's hammered gold production of the mid-fifteenth century. |
