Enrique IV's gold coinage from Seville was struck at the center of a monetary disaster of his own making. His reign saw such aggressive debasement of the billon coinage that confidence in Castilian currency collapsed almost entirely — yet the gold issues, produced to near-fine fineness, were largely insulated from that chaos and continued to serve international trade. The Seville mint was the most active of his gold-striking facilities, fed directly by Andalusian trade networks and Guinea gold flowing through Portuguese intermediaries.
AB#667 places this piece within the enrique series, named for the king himself — a rare instance of a Castilian monarch lending his name directly to a denomination.
