In June 1465, a group of Castilian nobles staged a theatrical deposition of King Enrique IV in effigy outside Ávila — stripping a straw dummy of its crown and royal insignia — then proclaimed the king's younger brother Alfonso as the rightful monarch. This coin belongs to that usurper coinage struck in Alfonso's name during the three years he held a precarious rival court. The episode is known to historians as the Farce of Ávila, one of the more dramatically literal acts of noble rebellion in medieval Iberian history.
Alfonso died suddenly in 1468, likely of plague, ending the pretendership before it could consolidate.
