Obverse description The royal arms of Portugal displayed on a crowned shield occupying the central field, featuring the traditional quintas arrangement of five escutcheons charged with bezants, surmounted by an ornate crown with floral finials. The mintmaster's initial G appears to the left of the shield and the initial A to the right, serving as attribution marks for the engraver Gaspar Reis and the Lisboa mint. A circular Latin legend surrounds the design, separated from the inner field by a beaded inner border. The outer rim is defined by a continuous beaded or corded border. The overall style is characteristic of Portuguese Renaissance milled coinage of the mid-sixteenth century.
