| Obverse description | The royal arms of Portugal displayed on a crowned shield occupying the central field, featuring the traditional quintas arrangement of five escutcheons charged with bezants, surmounted by an ornate crown with floral finials. The mintmaster's initial G appears to the left of the shield and the initial A to the right, serving as attribution marks for the engraver Gaspar Reis and the Lisboa mint. A circular Latin legend surrounds the design, separated from the inner field by a beaded inner border. The outer rim is defined by a continuous beaded or corded border. The overall style is characteristic of Portuguese Renaissance milled coinage of the mid-sixteenth century. |

| Reverse description | The royal arms of Portugal on a shield centered in the field, the exact presentation varying by variety: on Gomes Se 63, the shield is flanked by the mint letters G and A at each side, while on Gomes Se 64, the shield appears in a plain, unadorned field without flanking letters. The shield bears the traditional Portuguese quintas and bordure of castles. A circular Latin legend, incorporating the date, surrounds the central device and is enclosed within a beaded border. The rim is finished with a uniform beaded or corded border consistent with the obverse. |
