Leopold I of Lorraine spent much of his early reign as a duke without a duchy — French forces occupied Lorraine from 1670, and he was only restored to effective rule in 1698 following the Treaty of Ryswick. These écus, struck just six years into his restored sovereignty, came at considerable political cost: Louis XIV's tolerance of an independent Lorraine was conditional, and Leopold navigated a permanent diplomatic tightrope between Vienna and Versailles. The War of the Spanish Succession was already fracturing Europe when these were minted, and Lorraine's neutrality was fragile at best.
The Bar quartering reflects Leopold's inherited claim to the Duchy of Bar, held alongside Lorraine under the same ducal line since the fifteenth century.
