To the right of the effigy, the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome — one of Michelangelo's most celebrated architectural achievements — is depicted in detailed relief. The legend 'MICHELANGELO' arcs along the upper periphery, the issue year '1995' appears at the right centre field, and the artist's birth and death years '1475 - 1564' are inscribed along the lower exergue.
