Obverse description Bust of William Shakespeare facing three-quarters right occupies the right portion of the field, rendered in high relief with period Elizabethan collar and doublet detail. To the left, a pair of theatrical comedy and tragedy masks are depicted in relief. The legend GREAT BRITAIN arcs across the upper field in large raised letters. A ring of twelve five-pointed stars on a blue enamelled band frames the upper rim, referencing the European Community motif.

Reverse description Central device depicts the mythological scene of the Abduction of Europa: the figure of Europa, draped and with one arm raised, rides astride a bull (Zeus in disguise), rendered in bold relief against a radiating sunburst pattern that fills the field. The denomination ECU appears in large raised letters across the upper field. The date 1993 is inscribed in the lower exergue. A mint mark 'G' appears below the central design.
