Louis XII struck this écu under the monetary ordinance of 1507, which standardized gold coinage across the French royal mints following years of inconsistent alloy practices. The high fineness — among the purest gold coinages of the period — reflects deliberate policy rather than accident; Louis needed credible hard currency to finance ongoing Italian campaigns, and debased gold had cost his predecessors diplomatic credibility in Lombardy.
The type corresponds to Duplessy 655, a well-documented emission with known examples from at least six provincial mint marks.
