Obverse lettering PHILIPPVS DEI GRA FRANCORVM REX
(Translation: Philip, by the grace of God king of the French)
Reverse description A bold floriated cross pattée at centre, its arms ornamented with trefoils and fleurs-de-lis, set within a quadrilobe composed of four tangent circles each filled with fleurs-de-lis in the angles. The overall design creates an intricate interlocking pattern of lobes and Gothic floral ornaments filling the entire field. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the circumferential legend. The composition reflects the high Gothic aesthetic of the Capetian-Valois monetary tradition.
