Obverse description Facing bust of Charles IV, Count of Luxembourg (1316–1378), depicted in medieval royal regalia with a crown surmounted by a cross, wearing a draped mantle with a jewelled clasp at the neckline. The effigy is rendered in high relief in a medieval portrait style. Two heraldic shields flank the bust: to the left, the Imperial eagle of Bohemia, and to the right, the lion of Luxembourg. The curved legend around the upper field reads CHARLES IV. ∙ 1316-1378 COMTE DE LUXEMBOURG.

Reverse description Central design featuring the denomination ECU in large capital letters within a raised circular cartouche, itself encircled by a ring of twelve five-pointed stars representing the European Community member states. Surrounding this central motif, arranged around the field, are twelve individual heraldic shields corresponding to the twelve EC member nations, each rendered in fine detail. The fineness mark 999 appears in the lower exergue area below the central circle.
