The ECU Britannia was struck speculatively ahead of anticipated British participation in European monetary union — a political gamble that never paid off. The UK's ejection from the Exchange Rate Mechanism on Black Wednesday, September 16, 1992, effectively ended any realistic prospect of Britain adopting the ECU, leaving this series as a collector artifact for a currency union Britain never joined.
Issued by the Royal Mint in denominations pegged to the European Currency Unit's value against sterling at time of issue, the coins held no practical monetary circulation and were sold directly to collectors from the outset.
