| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse features the characteristic Genoese city gate (porta) displayed centrally in the field, flanked on the left by a crowned letter F (for Franciscus) and on the right by a fleur-de-lis, both emblems of the French royal authority of Francis I. A radiant sun is depicted above the portal, giving this issue its designation as the écu au soleil. The circumferential Latin legend reads FRANCISCVS DEI GRACIA FRAN REX, identifying Francis I as King of France by the grace of God. |
