August III — Elector of Saxony and King of Poland — ruled a Commonwealth he largely ignored, spending most of his reign in Dresden while Polish magnates ran the country into factional ruin. The Leipzig mint struck this issue under Saxon auspices, a reminder that the king's personal treasury and the Commonwealth's finances were never cleanly separated. Polish silver coinage of this period was routinely debased relative to its nominal value, feeding a chronic flight of full-weight foreign coin out of circulation.
