August III ruled Poland as an absentee king — he spent the vast majority of his reign in Dresden, and Polish monetary policy was managed with corresponding neglect. The Gdańsk mint operated under municipal authority rather than direct royal oversight, which gave it unusual latitude in striking city coinage even as the broader Polish monetary system deteriorated through the mid-eighteenth century. By 1760, August III had less than three years left to live, and this issue belongs to the final, thinning output of his long and largely indifferent reign.
