Stefan Batory's double taler issues from the Vilnius mint occupy an uncomfortable position in Polish-Lithuanian numismatics: large silver multiples were prestige pieces, not everyday currency, yet Batory needed hard political justification for their production. The 1580 issues coincide precisely with his Livonian campaign against Ivan the Terrible — the siege of Velikiye Luki fell that same year — and such pieces likely circulated among military creditors and foreign diplomats rather than in any market.
Kop. 3387 is among the more elusive Vilnius double taler varieties of this reign. The Kopicki reference itself flags limited surviving examples.
