Aanvullende informatie

Stefan Batory's double taler of 1580 was struck at Olkusz, a mining town in Lesser Poland whose silver deposits made it one of the Commonwealth's most productive mints during the second half of the sixteenth century. Batory had reorganized royal coinage aggressively after his election in 1576, pushing through monetary reforms intended to stabilize a currency degraded by decades of debasement under the last Jagiellons. The Olkusz facility was central to that ambition.

At 58.5 grams, pieces of this size saw limited circulation — they functioned primarily as prestige payment and diplomatic tender. Genuine surviving examples with full original surfaces are uncommon; most known specimens show some edge handling consistent with use as presentation gifts.
