Obverse description Armored and draped bust of Stefan Batory, King of Poland, facing right, wearing a crown and elaborate plate armor adorned with decorative motifs. The king's effigy is rendered in high relief in the Renaissance manner typical of Polish royal coinage of the late sixteenth century. A continuous Latin legend encircles the bust along the periphery, with the date 1580 appearing within the legend. The field around the portrait is closely cropped, giving the design a bold and imposing character consistent with large-denomination hammered coinage of the period.
