The double thaler denomination was an awkward fit for Polish monetary circulation — too large for everyday commerce, too small for the major merchant transactions that used full-weight German and Dutch thalers. Issues like this one from Bydgoszcz served diplomatic and prestige functions as much as mercantile ones, often presented as gifts or used in high-value contractual settlements where the physical weight of silver mattered more than denomination convenience.
Kop. 1393 is among the rarer Bydgoszcz multiples of Sigismund III's reign. The Bydgoszcz mint operated intermittently under lease arrangements, and quality control across dies was inconsistent — known specimens frequently show uneven edge treatment characteristic of that mint's larger flans.
