The dwudukat — a double ducat — was an unusual denomination for Poland in the 1520s, and Sigismund I's Kraków issues from this period coincide directly with his monetary reforms of 1526, which overhauled the Polish coinage system following decades of debasement and fragmented regional minting. The reform established clearer hierarchies of denomination and brought the royal mint at Kraków under tighter crown control. A gold double ducat in this environment was effectively a prestige piece, struck to demonstrate the reformed mint's competence as much as to circulate.
Kop. 446 is a rare type with limited surviving examples across major collections.
