August II assumed the Polish throne in 1697 after converting from Lutheranism to Catholicism — a purely political calculation required by Polish constitutional law. The Dresden mint struck this two-ducat piece in the same year, almost certainly as part of the celebratory and diplomatic coinage associated with his election. Such pieces circulated among courts rather than markets, functioning as gifts and political currency at a level above ordinary commerce.

The Kopicki unlisted status suggests either a die variant unrecorded at the time of compilation or a piece known only from a handful of examples — Friedberg 2828a being the primary reference anchor for the type.
