Additional information

The boratynki crisis of the 1650s–60s grew from exactly this kind of small silver issue. Jan II Kazimierz's reign coincided with the Deluge — simultaneous Swedish, Russian, and Cossack invasions that decimated the Commonwealth's treasury. The Wilno mint, operating under Lithuanian jurisdiction, struck these pieces partly to keep military payrolls moving when larger denominations had disappeared into hoarding.

Kopicki 3578 is a Lithuanian attribution. The Wilno facility operated under distinct administrative arrangements from the Crown mints at Kraków and Poznań, which occasionally produced minor die differences collectors use to confirm provenance.
