Vespasian struck this issue in 71 AD, the year following his consolidation of power after the chaos of the Year of the Four Emperors, and the same year his son Titus completed the sack of Jerusalem. The legend FORTVNAE REDVCI — "to Fortune the home-bringer" — was a deliberate political statement, invoking the goddess who returns the emperor safely from distant campaigns. Vespasian had spent the Jewish War in the east; his arrival in Rome in 70 AD was the homecoming this type commemorates.
