In her extended right hand she holds a small figure of Victory, while her left hand grasps a vertical spear; her left foot rests upon the head of a conquered Dacian and her right upon a helmet, referencing Trajan's Dacian campaigns. Three shields are arrayed beside the cuirass, reinforcing the scene's triumphal character. The senatorial legend S P Q R OPTIMO PRINCIPI encircles the composition, with the S C mark of senatorial authority prominently placed in the field. The reverse type as a whole constitutes a sophisticated programmatic statement of Roman military supremacy and the emperor's honorific title 'Optimus Princeps'. |
