This dupondius belongs to a Lyon mint series struck under Augustus — not Tiberius, despite the obverse legend — produced at the Lugdunum facility that had been established around 15 BC to supply the Rhine legions with coinage. The altar depicted on the reverse is the Ara Romae et Augusti at Lugdunum, dedicated on August 1, 12 BC, the same complex where sixty Gallic tribes assembled annually under Roman supervision. That political assembly was the entire point of the altar's construction, a calculated piece of Augustan infrastructure designed to redirect Gallic religious and civic loyalty toward Rome.
Lyon mint bronzes of this period are notoriously poorly centered, a chronic production issue, not incidental wear.
