The shield motif, known as the clupeus virtutis, evokes the honorary shield awarded to Augustus by the Senate. The reverse legend CLEMENTIAE S C flanks the central device, invoking the Augustan virtue of clemency and affirming the senatorial authority for the coin's issue. |
