Reverse description Radiate head of the deified Augustus facing right, with a lituus (augural staff) placed in the field before his face. The entire design is encircled by a wreath of laurel leaves tied at the base, forming a decorative border that frames both the portrait and the accompanying Latin legend. The legend CAESAR appears in the left field. The radiate crown denotes Augustus's divine status, while the lituus alludes to his role as augur, reflecting the religious and dynastic ideology of the Julio-Claudian dynasty as expressed through provincial civic coinage.

Additional information

Sabratha was one of the three cities of Tripolitania — the Tripolis — and issued bronze coinage under Augustus and Tiberius as a mark of civic prestige rather than municipal necessity. Roman provincial mints in Africa Proconsularis operated at the discretion of local magistrates, and Sabratha's output was modest by any measure. The MAA 42b reference places this among a tightly documented group of civic bronzes, and known examples are genuinely scarce in any condition.
