Struck at Tarraco — the administrative capital of Hispania Citerior and Rome's oldest settlement on the Iberian Peninsula — this issue belongs to a series produced by the provincial mint in honor of Livia following her death in 29 AD. The Senate had refused Augustus's request to deify her during his lifetime; Tiberius, never close to his mother and openly hostile to her political influence, declined to ratify her deification himself. The cult honors encoded in the legend were as far as official recognition went until Claudius finally deified her in 42 AD.
