The tresviri monetales — the three-man commission overseeing coinage — were a Republican institution Augustus deliberately retained to project continuity while simultaneously monopolizing actual monetary authority. Titus Crispinus Sulpicianus held this magistracy around 18 BC, one of the last generations for whom the position carried any meaningful administrative independence. Within decades it would become ceremonial in all but name.
The SC notation on bronzes of this period reflects a genuine senatorial role in authorizing aes coinage, distinct from the gold and silver Augustus controlled directly through his own procurators.
