Sabina's coinage was produced almost entirely under the direction of Hadrian, who controlled imperial image-making with unusual deliberateness. The PIETAS type belongs to a group of issues celebrating virtues associated with the empress, though Sabina herself held little independent political power — Hadrian's relationship with her was, by most ancient accounts, cold and largely ceremonial. She predeceased him by a year or two, dying around 136–137 AD, after which Hadrian consecrated her and issued a separate posthumous series.
RIC II.3 #2528 reflects the revised Trajanic and Hadrianic volume scholarship, with the old RIC II attributions substantially reorganized.
